My Past Museum Show--Mindscapes

In August 2021 I had the unique good fortune of an invitation to create a one-woman show of whatever art work I would like to submit.  My husband Mike and I headed to South Florida State College's Museum of Florida Art and Culture to, "case the joint," and found a large, airy exhibit space with one 90' curved exhibit wall along with several other large walls and moveable, variably configurable walls.

As with any free puppy, this opportunity had unexpected strings.  The museum was, "between curators," and I had to do all exhibit curation myself.  This included choosing a name, theme, acquiring signage for explanatory boards, artist's bio and image reproduction. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), I had more artwork inventory than would fill this large space.  After determining which artwork, "made the cut," I needed to fit the pieces to the space and arrange them in a manner that made sense (at least to me).

After months of preparation,  Mike and I installed "Mindscapes," at the museum in 2 1/2 days.  The exhibit includes 44 intaglio prints including 2 copper plates, 29 oil paintings, and 9 graphite drawings.  The process was exhausting, but the resultant display pleased us.

To me, Mindscapes means, "landscapes of the mind"--either a concrete memory from our travels or imaginary as regards some of the creatures' inhabiting my etchings and paintings.  Sometimes the line blurs between reality and fiction.  In, "Salad Bar," as pictured here, a bevy of veggie drinking buddies inhabits a barroom.  I've not habituated barrooms and have little idea of their appearance, so I had to imagine that.  However, since I'm familiar with vegetables and their quirky habits, I could extract their images directly from my mind.

Show is now long over, a pleasant memory that had over 500 visitors, created a few new friendships and was an overall success. Time to relax  now and create some more prints/paintings/drawings

How glad I am to have experienced a visit to view "Mindscapes." The road trip sojourn provided time for conversation with dear friend Trudy Stacey. The Florida Museum of Art and Culture is a worthy destination as the permanent collection contains fabulous treasures. Elizabeth, your playful soulful images contribute now to my own mindscape memories. The detailed and patient expertise evidenced to craft intaglio prints is mind-blowing. Thank you for expressing your talent in outward form so people like me may experience visual and mental delight.

This bar is histerical. You are so clever and talented. There is so much to talk about here. I like the squash, making out. Ha! Shirley -- SIL
